Festive lights won't be turned on until six days before Christmas Day in Ayrshire town

Irvine's Christmas lights won't be turned on until six days before Christmas.

But Irvine will have a switch-on ceremony, unlike other major Ayrshire towns.

Tik Tok star Carmen Thomson has agreed to host again this year.

The Irvine Youth Forum and Irvine Special Events Forum elves have been hard at work for the past two months planning their 'Christmas Extravaganza' show.

And the Christmas Extravaganza show will take place Sunday, December 19 between 3pm and 7pm — less than a week before Christmas Day.

Both Kilmarnock and Ayr axed their ceremonies with Kilwinning's taking place last week.

But Irvine residents will have to wait a few weeks before the lights twinkle in their town.

At the event there will be a funfair, Break-A-Leg drama will be putting on a panto, singers and dancers from Ayrshire dance schools are to be confirmed for the event along with a couple of surprises along the way.

And kids will get to meet Santa in his grotto inside the Townhouse between 12pm and 3pm where kids will get a selection box.

The light switch on is set for 6pm and all the events are FREE and the main stage will be set up opposite Mama's chippy.

Irvine Youth Forum Organiser and MSYP Justin Jones said: "Last year we had to just put the lights up ourselves due to COVID-19 which was a pity but we've all been working hard to make sure this year's event goes ahead.

"We wanted to give this year our all and are bringing the Christmas Extravaganza to the town, similar to our 2019 show.

"We were waiting to find out what the restrictions were before going ahead with our bookings so the past two months have been hectic.

"It'll be good just to get everyone together and spread some festive cheer in the community."

The Marymass Queen and her Marys will do the honours of flipping the Christmas light switch on the day.

TikTok star Carmen Thomson, who went viral with her Tik Tok comedy sketches during lockdown, has confirmed she'll be hosting the show with organiser Sylvia Mallinson again.

The comedienne has recently hit 21,000 followers on the app.

Carmen said: "I've been doing well since I started in lockdown just having fun with my niece Brooke — she's raging I've got all the followers.

"I was only a couple of thousand a few months a go and now I'm at 21,000 followers.

"I hosted it once before with Sylvia and I'm really excited about doing it again this year.

"I love getting the crowd going and spreading a bit of Christmas cheer after the downer that's been Covid.

"It'll be good to have a laugh again and see everyone out with their family in the town."

Carmen, known for her lipsync comedy, said: "I love being in front of the crowd and cheering everyone on, I might throw in a few Tik Tok dances for the crowd too, you never know."

Irvine Special Events Forum Organiser Sylvia Mallinson praised the efforts of the Irvine Youth Forum.

She said: "This year's Christmas show is going to be an amazing day for everyone and it wouldn't be possible without the Irvine Youth Forum.

"The efforts they've gone to for this year's show in such a short space of time is really amazing; they've worked so hard.

"The extravaganza show will be a little different from what we're all used to and it'll get everyone in the Christmas spirit."
