Ferry investigation after mum and child go overboard

A woman and her 11-year-old had to be rescued after they fell overboard from a ferry as it moved in to dock.

An investigation into what happened is underway after the woman and her daughter entered the water on Thursday (February 25).

The Stena Horizon vessel was arriving at Belfast harbour following a journey from Liverpool.

A rescue boat from another Stena line ferry that was in the harbour at the time was the first to reach the pair, and the crew members were able to bring them to safety.

Both the woman and her daughter were taken to hospital for treatment.

The Stena vessel was approaching its berth at the Belfast terminal when the incident happened at around 6.45pm.

A spokesman said: "Stena Line deployed emergency response crews from the Stena Horizon and Stena Superfast VIII, which was in the vicinity at the time.

“Two persons were retrieved from the water and were attended to by local emergency service crews waiting on the dockside in Belfast.

“Stena Line has informed all relevant authorities of the incident and is currently assisting with the various investigations now underway.”

The incident is under investigation by Belfast Harbour Police.

The said: "Both females were safely recovered from the water and taken to hospital by emergency services."

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the full circumstances of the incident were still to be established.
