Fernando Torres admits his delight to play in a Liverpool shirt one last time

Fernando Torres has expressed his delight at being able to pull on a Liverpool shirt for one last time.

'El Nino', who scored 81 goals in 142 appearances in three-and-a-half seasons at the club, will return to Anfield in March 2020 to play in a legends match against Barcelona .

Torres recently announced his retirement after a brief stint in Japan with Sagan Tosu.

Retiring from football has cleared his diary to compete in a charity fixture, and he is eager to mark his return with a goal.

He said: “Hopefully it happens!

“I received many invitations from Liverpool to play with them in the past but I couldn’t do it because I was still playing. So, I’ll be so happy to come back and play in a Liverpool shirt again.”

Torres previously competed in a Liverpool charity match in 2015 - four years after his controversial £50m transfer to Chelsea .

The Anfield faithful sung his famous 'Liverpool's number nine' chant on that occasion, and he is hoping to hear it once again when Barcelona's greats come to town.

“That song has been the soundtrack of my career for many years,” the 35-year-old said.

“I still feel something special when I hear it. It happened in 2015 when I came [back]. It made me feel happy because I know how important the relationship is between players and fans.

“I felt so proud from the first day here. I know some of the best strikers in history played for Liverpool at Anfield, so these [fans] saw many good players. So it’s a privilege for them to make a song for me.

“I remembered to listen to that song many times when I played at home and away. To listen to it for one more time will be special again.”
