Fenwick fired football coach Gene Nudo on Friday, just a day before the Friars’ first-round state playoff game against Payton.

Nudo was let go after the school received information that in 2016 he allowed an assistant coach to “attend a couple of football practices and assist on the sidelines during some games at the end of the season” without a background check, according to a statement released by the school on Monday.

“When this was confirmed by the school and was brought to Coach Nudo’s attention he acknowledged that he did not alert Fenwick that he was doing this and did not follow Fenwick’s important policies and procedures,” the statement said. “At that time, Coach Nudo agreed to step down immediately.”

Fenwick says it has no evidence of any wrongdoing by the person.

Nudo was 54-35 at Fenwick over the past eight seasons. He previously coached at Driscoll and in the Arena Football League.

Assistant coach Titcus Pettigrew took over the team on Saturday against Payton. The Friars won 21-17.
