Federal Users Get Free Access to Perplexity’s Top AI Models

Perplexity has launched Perplexity for Government, a new initiative to make its AI platform more accessible and secure for federal employees. The move comes as agencies across Washington are under pressure to adopt AI in line with executive actions like the Office of Management and Budget’s AI Action Plan.

According to Perplexity, it already serves thousands of U.S. government workers daily, and with this rollout, it’s introducing a two-pronged approach.

First, all federal users, regardless of subscription status, will now get access to Perplexity’s most advanced AI models, with automatic “zero data usage” protections in place. That means queries from government domains will not be stored or used for training, addressing a growing concern that many public AI tools recycle user data. The protections apply whether users are logged in or not, and Perplexity says agencies can also submit their network ranges for broader coverage.

Second, the company is introducing Perplexity Enterprise Pro for Government, which is a customized version of its enterprise platform. This edition will integrate with agency knowledge bases and provide access to a mix of Perplexity’s own models and third-party AI systems. The company plans to make it available at a nominal cost of $0.25 per agency for the first 15 months, with distribution through government-wide procurement channels like GSA Multiple Award Schedule.

When it comes to AI adoption in government, it has so far leaned heavily on freely available web tools, which is good, but it keeps the government behind in the latest technology and poses data security risks. As a result, Perplexity is positioning its government-focused offering as a more secure and up-to-date alternative, while also aligning with federal efforts to modernize AI use across agencies.

So with the newly launched Perplexity for Government, the company is betting that a combination of free access, strong security guarantees, and a low-cost enterprise option will help it gain traction among federal workers and agencies.
