Federal election latest: Today is set to be a big day in the election count — unless the seats are 'ultra close'

Labor edges closer to majority government.

Australians could have clarity on the final election result today, according to chief elections analyst Antony Green.

Labor needs just one seat to form a majority government — which would allow the party to govern in its own right without crossbench support — and currently three seats remain in doubt.

Australian Electoral Commission staff spent Sunday processing declaration envelopes ready to be counted today.

Green says the counting today should clarify the final result, unless the three seats remain ultra close.

The seats still in doubt

Macnamara, Victoria

Deakin, Victoria

Gilmore, New South Wales

Labor will govern in its own right securing 76 seats
