Fears over high winds sees All Under One Banner pro-independence rally in Glasgow cancelled

An independence rally planned in Glasgow for this Saturday has been axed due to weather warnings.

All Under One Banner (AUOB), a group set up "to raise the profile of the need of an independent Scotland" in 2014, announced the cancelled event on Twitter last night.

However, a march through the city is due to go ahead as planned.

They wrote: "Due to the high winds expected on Saturday we've today decided to cancel the outdoor rally as this poses a H&S hazard.

"So as to ensure the line-up is enabled we've now arranged a press conference at a venue after the march.

"The march is 100% on with max attendance required."

Thousands of independence supporters were expected to hit the streets this weekend, with many being left disappointed by the news.

One woman said: "We are Scots and residents of Scotland, a bit of weather doesn't deter us. Wrap up, get out, shout loud and proud and in the words of the past 'if at first you don't succeed try try and try again'."

Another added: "My friends and I from Dumbarton will be turning up for the march despite the weather.

"We will all be prepared for rain, hail, snow, sunshine and blown a gail.

"We will be there!!!"

The group have however confirmed the planned march through Glasgow city centre will still go ahead.

They said: "The march is one element of the demo and it is 100% still on.

"The rally (outdoor) is the other element of the demo - we have cancelled this due to high winds".

The event was organised in the wake of the December general election.
