Father of freed hostage calls for stronger action to rescue remaining captives

Police and civilian volunteers battle Hamas militants while trying to rescue hostages in Ofakim

In a tense and ongoing hostage situation in Gaza, updates reveal that out of the 132 hostages initially held, approximately 30 have tragically lost their lives, with their bodies still in the possession of the Hamas terrorists, according to Israel. However, there is some progress, as 110 hostages have been successfully released thus far. Efforts are being made by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to broker a deal between Israel and Hamas for the remaining hostages, but there are no guarantees of success at this time. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Hamas has responded to a recent proposal, though the details and outcome of the response remain unclear.

In the midst of this harrowing situation, the father of nine-year-old Emily Hand, Thomas Hand, recently shared an update on his daughter's recovery after being held captive by Hamas for approximately 50 days. Hand mentioned that Emily is remarkably resilient and has bounced back from the traumatic ordeal. During an interview with Israeli media, Hand revealed that Emily has developed code words to avoid using certain terms associated with her time in captivity. For example, she refers to Gaza and terrorists using different code words and even uses code words for food or items she dislikes.

With discussions of a potential new deal to secure the release of the hostages ongoing, Thomas Hand, drawing from his own experience, expresses the perspective of a father who would be willing to do anything to bring his child back safely. Hand acknowledges the pressure faced by the Israeli government, acknowledging demonstrations and pressure from the families of the hostages who advocate for their loved ones' return. However, due to his limited access to news for the past few weeks, Hand does not comment on the efforts of the Israeli government.

Regarding Emily's experience during captivity, Hand reveals that she was treated relatively well compared to other groups, as there were no physical abuse or molestation. However, she did endure challenges such as shortage of food, clean water, and lack of access to hygiene facilities.

Through Emily's recovery, Hand offers lessons that may help others in similar situations, emphasizing the importance of reintroducing familiar elements from their previous lives, such as pets, favorite foods, and toys, in order to facilitate the process of reconnecting with their past.

Thomas Hand has been actively engaging with lawmakers, including meetings with the Biden administration, as part of a united political movement in Israel committed to securing the release of the remaining hostages. In response to the removal of posters featuring the kidnapped hostages by some Americans who have called for ceasefires but not their release, Hand expresses his astonishment, finding it incredibly difficult to understand why they would deny the truth of the hostages' situation and the urgency of their rescue.

As the situation in Gaza unfolds, the fate of the remaining hostages hangs in the balance, and international efforts continue to advocate for their safe return to their families.
