Father found with stun gun and knuckle dusters in his suitcase at Cardiff Airport

A father caught with a stun gun at Cardiff Airport while travelling back from a family holiday has been jailed.

Jordan Williams, 23, was caught with the weapon on arriving back in Wales from Bulgaria with his partner and child from on May 27 last year.

The stun gun, which was disguised as a torch and capable of discharging 7,900 volts, was found in a suitcase along with two knuckle dusters and an extendable police baton.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday heard that Williams told police he was going to display the weapons in a case at his home in Barry along with samurai swords and machetes.

A previous hearing heard that the defendant claimed he did not know it was an offence to possess the weapons and had been told by the shop in Bulgaria he could take the items back to the UK as long as they were stored in a suitcase.

Williams pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm disguised as another object and three counts of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

The court heard the defendant had a number of previous convictions relating to violence including assault, battery, ABH, and robbery.

Defence barrister Meirion Davies said his client had nearly died after being repeatedly stabbed and had been recovering in hospital for a number of weeks after undergoing surgery.

He also said that Williams had become a father again in November.

Sentencing, Judge Michael Fitton QC said: “I do not accept that the explanation you gave is an excuse for your offence and it suggests a degree of naivety of which I am sceptical considering your history.”

He added: “You are a young man with a family who in his youth was a regular offender, committing offences of violence recklessly and deliberately and in recent history has behaved irresponsibly and recklessly.

“In that context, I ask myself about the impact of the event on you of having been stabbed in the heart and almost died.

“It would be unjust of me to ignore that and it is a relevant feature that should be reflected in some way on the calculation of the sentence I must pass.”

Williams, of Holton Road, Barry , was sentenced to a total of 32 months imprisonment.
