A 45-year-old man has drowned in northern NSW after trying to pull his daughter from the surf at Lennox Head.
The incident occurred when the man, his partner and their three children were in "shallow water" at Seven Mile Beach about 6.30pm Wednesday, police said.
The father attempted to rescue his 11-year-old daughter when she was swept out to sea on a body board, but was unable to bring her back to shore.
The man's wife subsequently reached the girl and the pair made it back to the beach and alerted authorities.
Lifesavers a short time later found the man in the surf and brought him back to shore, but he could not be revived.
Police on Thursday confirmed the family was from Lennox Head.
"The family is from Lennox Head; officers from Richmond Police District have alerted the Irish Consulate of the man's death," police said in a statement.
The beach was reportedly unpatrolled when the incident took place, with the family said to be swimming about 400 metres south of the beach's lifeguard post.
The man's death represents the third drowning on the state's beaches in less than three weeks.
Police and Surf Life Saving NSW earlier this month issued a safety reminder to be extra careful in and around waterways after recent drownings.
