Father charged after twins found dead in hot car in New York

A father has been charged over the deaths of his one-year-old twins who died after they were left in a hot car in New York.

Juan Rodriguez, 39, was charged with two counts each of criminally negligent homicide and manslaughter after his infant twins Mariza and Phoenix were left in the back of his Honda while he went to work in the Bronx.

Social worker Rodriguez reportedly told police that he parked at his job at 8am on Friday and only realised the children were in the car at 4pm.

A passerby called police after witnessing Rodriguez screaming on the side of the road beside his office in Kingsbridge, New York.

The babies were found to be breathing when paramedics arrived. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

"This is a horrific situation. It is early in the investigative process; we will release more information as it becomes available," an NYPD spokesperson said.
