Fatal blaze in Melbourne's north-east leaves one woman dead, two children in critical condition

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal house fire in Mooroolbark in Melbourne's north-east overnight.

Emergency services were called to an address in Maralee Drive after reports of a house fire around 9pm.

Fire crews entered the premises and located a woman with injuries to her stomach and two unconscious children.

Emergency services were able to extinguish the fire while ambulance crews treated the woman and children, however, the woman died at the scene.

It is believed the woman and two children were the only occupants of the home at the time of the fire.

A boy and a girl are in a critical but stable condition in hospital after sustaining smoke inhalation injuries.

Police said the father of the children has been present at the hospital.

While the exact circumstances of the blaze are yet to be determined, authorities said they are not looking for anyone else at this time.

Anyone with information have been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
