Prominent former and current officials in Fatah are preparing new electoral lists that could test the movement's unity and strength. This could also pose a new challenge that might affect the presidential elections.
The Central Committee of Fatah is holding discussions to adopt a united list, which officials pledged that would meet the expectations of Palestinians.
However, other Fatah officials, including Nasser al-Qudwa and dismissed Fatah leader Mohammed Dahlan are preparing competing lists.
Also, a Member of the Fatah Revolutionary Council Hatem Abdel-Qader affirmed that there are three lists at the moment, noting that there could be more.
In the 2006 elections, Hamas had rivals inside the movement, as well as angry members who voted for Hamas, which deprived Fatah of its majority representation in the legislative council.
The movement is currently trying to avoid the same scenario.
Abdel-Qader affirmed that Marwan Barghouti will not be part of the legislative elections because he insists on running for the presidential race. Further, he stressed that Barghouti’s decision is final.
In the same context, Nabil Amr from the movement stated that he is considering running for the elections through an elections list.
Legislative polls to be held in May, the first in 15 years, while the presidential election is set for July.
