Fantasy Impact: Dalvin Cook to Sign With Jets

The AFC East just got a lot more crowded (and confusing) in its backfields.

Shortly after it was reported that former Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott would sign with the New England Patriots, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Dalvin Cook has inked a one-year deal with the New York Jets. It’s a one-year deal worth up to $8.6 million, and it creates yet another potential committee in fantasy land.

Cook finished a respectable 11th in PPR points among backs a season ago, but he also had his fewest rushing yards per game and yards per rush average. Cook was also tough to trust, scoring fewer than 11 points in eight of 17 games. Still, he’s far from “washed up” and will no doubt play a big role in the Jets offense.

That’s the good news. Here’s the bad news.

Cook’s presence in the Big Apple all but eliminates any chance Breece Hall had of putting up a breakout season. The second-year back looked great as a rookie, but his season was cut short due to a torn ACL. The Jets’ interest in Cook, even before he signed, was a red flag that Hall might not be ready for Week 1.

Now it seems, the Jets can bring Hall along slowly and use Cook as their top back to start the season. Even upon Hall’s return (whenever that might be), he might not reclaim the top spot on the depth chart immediately. Regardless, this is going to be a committee that could drive fantasy managers up a green and white wall.

Cook, a once elite fantasy back, can no longer be seen as a No. 1 or 2 runner (at least not once Hall is back on the field). I’d be targeting him as a flex starter at best, and I’d probably rather avoid him in drafts. As for Hall, I’d still draft him ahead of Cook, but as more of a No. 2 runner with a lower ceiling.
