Fans set to return to outdoor sporting events in Northern Ireland

Fans are set to return to outdoor sporting events this month.

The NI Executive met on Thursday to discuss a further easing of restrictions in Northern Ireland.

It is understood that ministers have agreed up to 500 people can attend outdoor sport events from an indicative date of May 24, with final approval expected to be given on May 20.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that up to 1,000 fans will be allowed to attend next week's Sadler's Peaky Blinder Irish Cup final.

The showpiece fixture is being played at at Mourneview Park in Lurgan next Friday, May 21.

The last Irish League games to have fans was back on December 19, with all fixtures since then having been played behind closed doors.

It will give the four semi-finalists an extra incentive as they look to book their place in the final.

The semis are also being played at Mourneview Park on Tuesday, May 18.

Crusaders take on Larne in the 4pm kick-off, with Ballymena United vs Linfield at 8pm.

It also means the last two rounds of Premiership fixtures (May 25 and 29) and European play-offs will also have fans in attendance.

The easing of restrictions will also be positive news for fans of Ulster Rugby and GAA who have been patiently waiting to return.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that schools will also be allowed to play sports fixtures against each other from May 24.

Indoor sports training will be allowed to resume on the same date.
