Leeds United fans erupt into almighty roar as players ride open-top bus outside Elland Road

Fans roared with excitement when Leeds United players celebrated on an open-top bus on the night they were officially crowned Champions.

Thousands had waited outside Elland Road Stadium to show their support for the Whites on the night they finally got to lift the trophy after 16 years out of the Premier League.

In surreal scenes, the players and staff lifted the trophy to an almost-empty stadium thanks to the strict social distancing rules in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

But the army of loyal fans outside the stadium more than made up for it as they set off flares, sang, chanted and danced for their team.

And their support was repaid when the players - despite warnings from West Yorkshire Police and Leeds City Council not to gather in large crowds - rode past on an open-topped double decker adorned with the words Champions.

It was all the fans needs as they erupted into a long, loud rumbling roar that could no doubt be heard across the quieter streets in the city.

After 16 years out of the Premier League - and 28 years since they lifted a trophy - it's fair to say not many will begrudge them their moment in the limelight.

It was quickly over though, more than likely in a bid not to encourage more crowds, and the players were soon out of sight.
