Fans call for Sydney Devine statue to mark contribution to Scots showbiz industry

Fans and friends of Sydney Devine have called for a statue to mark his contribution to Scotland’s entertainment industry.

The performer, who sold 15million albums in seven decades, died on Saturday, aged 81, after a short illness.

He had been admitted to hospital last month with a chest and lung complaint.

Those who knew the singer have suggested three possible locations where a statue could be erected in his memory.

BBC broadcaster and Daily Record columnist Tam Cowan, a close friend of Sydney, suggested his birthplace of Cleland, Lanarkshire, his adopted hometown of Ayr or the Glasgow Pavilion.

Tam said: “A statue would be a great idea. In third place, would be his birthplace in Cleland.

“Second place is in the centre of Ayr, which was his adopted home and where he lived for a long number of years and watched his family grow up.

“The No1 place for a statue would be the Pavilion theatre in Glasgow.

“The last time I saw him there was in November 2019, which was his 45th consecutive annual gig.

“He had already broken all sorts of records. He was a true Scottish icon. Sydney was right up there.”

Pavilion general manager Iain Gordon added: “It would be a great tribute to have a statue.

“Sydney was a great person for helping people in showbiz and never asked for any recognition for it.”
