Famous DJ eyes up This Morning role after Phillip Schofield is AXED after final show

A legendary DJ has thrown his hat in the ring to become the next regular host of This Morning after Phillip Schofield left the popular ITV daytime show.

Phil made the decision to walk away from the programme on Saturday afternoon after days of speculation, as the pressure piled on for bosses at the award-winning daytime show to act following the events that unfolded.

The presenter, 61, admits that members of staff at ITV have been aware that the situation surrounding himself and Holly Willoughby can no longer go on. Phil had hosted the show for 21 years.

Now the focus turns to who will replace Phil and a popular DJ has put his hand up for consideration.

DJ Fat Tony shared a photo of him behind the decks with Alison beaming, which was captioned: "The new presenters of @thismorning @alisonhammond55."

The photo had over 1,000 likes at time of writing and fans flocked to the comments section to support the suggestion.

One person wrote: "I’d love that too be true," with another adding: "Ohhh this would sort that s*** show out for sure."

A third fan commented: "MAKE IT Happen could not think of anyone more entertaining," while a fourth said: "I'd actually watch it if you were presenting!"

Alison Hammond appears to be the frontrunner to replace Phil with the former Big Brother star being a fans' favourite of the show.

She has the hosting duties on Friday alongside Dermot O'Leary, who is also in the running, with Rylan also rumoured to be in line to present with Holly.

Announcing his decision with a statement on his Instagram Stories, Phil said: "I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning. But recently, This Morning itself has become the story.

"Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind. I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.

"So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially This Morning’s amazing viewers – and I’ll see you all for the Soap Awards next month."

Holly also took to her Instagram Stories to pay a sweet tribute to her former co-host.

She wrote: "Hi everyone... It's been over 13 great years presenting This Morning with Phil and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all of his knowledge, his experience and his humour. The sofa won't feel the same without him."
