Family who 'never missed rent payment' kicked out of home after fire next door

A family say they are being evicted from their home after it caught fire - because their landlord claimed he did not have building insurance to pay for the damages.

Keleigh Whitaker and her family have been ordered to leave the property in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire where they have lived for nine years, Grimsby Live reported.

A fire broke out on April 2 at their neighbour's house but soon spread to their home damaging their patio windows and upstairs window.

Ms Whitaker lives at the property with her father and two siblings.

The blaze started at their neighbour's garden, but spread because of a nearby gas bottle that ignited.

Just three days later, their landlord gave them one month's to leave the property, claiming he did not have building insurance to cover the cost of the damage, according to Ms Whitaker.

She said: "We've never, ever missed a rent payment.

"We've just received a letter giving us four weeks' notice to leave - he's not even attempted to fix the house. There was no apology."

The fire caused "moderate" damaged to Ms Whitaker's home, spilling onto the ground floor and first floor as well as damaging the fencing and drainpipe.

Flames also spread to an outbuilding at the neighbouring property, severely damaging the ground floor, first floor and roof area of that house, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said.

Ms Whitaker said: "It was really lucky everyone was out. If I was in, I could have been dead from smoke inhalation as my bedroom was underneath it."

Firefighters used used two hose reels, a main line with a total of six crew members to combat the blaze.

Ms Whitaker said: "Less than a week later, we got the letter through telling us to leave."

The family-of-four have been ordered to leave their home by May 3.

She added: "I'm getting ill from living in a cold house, and we're worried that the boards are hardly secured at all.

"I've also had to throw a lot of clothes away that were smoke damaged, as well as my favourite pillow which I had owned for 13 years."

Grimsby Live has contacted the landlord for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.
