Family of woman killed after police car crashes into her vehicle awarded $10million

The family of a woman who was killed in a crash as a result of a high-speed police chase has been given a multi-million dollar payout.

Stacy Vaughn-Harrell was killed in June 2017 after a vehicle fleeing Chicago police crashed into her car and now her family have been awarded $10million (£7.9m).

Stacy was driving home with her daughter, 21-year-old Kimberlyn Meyers when their car was struck by the SUV.

The driver of the SUV that hit them fled on foot after the crash.

Vaughn-Harrell's family were heartbroken after the ordeal and filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago.

They claimed two officers took part in a high-speed pursuit and thus it was their fault that the car they were chasing crashed and killed her.

The jury found the City of Chicago at fault for her death.

The city told ABC7: "The Department of Law is reviewing the verdict and assessing its legal options."

“For her to be struck down the way she was—it's an awful thing,” Helen Vaughn, Stacy’s mother said at the vigil previously.

She continued: "She loved life, to leave children like this is a traumatic thing."

“It's just a lot of unanswered questions that need to be answered and I'm just gonna deal with this the best way I can and just keep my faith in the lord,” said Vaugh-Harrell’s son Joe Banks Jr before the verdict.

Meanwhile, this week, another Chicago police squad car was involved in a crash that sent several police units rushing to the scene.

Police said one officer was injured and was rushed to the hospital in stable condition.
