Family forced to huddle in 'igloo' home after heating cut off during -15C freeze

A family was forced to spend four nights huddled together in the same bed as their home felt "like an igloo" after their heating was cut off.

As temperatures fell to -15C overnight in some parts of the UK, Joseph Grady and Louise Stockley resorted to desperate measures to try to keep warm at home.

The couple, who have three children, Raegan, four, Aurora, two, and JJ, eight, were unable to heat their home in Anfield, Liverpool, for days after their heating and hot water were switched off.

Joseph, 28, said an engineer sent by Your Housing Group told him their boiler was unsafe but did not say when their heating would be restored, reports the Liverpool Echo.

He said two of his children are sick with colds and having the heating off for a few days only made it worse.

The dad said: "I haven't had any contact from them since Thursday. I just keep calling them and getting fobbed off with promises of call-backs from engineers that never come.

"My house is like an igloo. Two of the children are already sick with colds and the house isn't helping."

According to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, tenants have the right to expect their landlord to carry out repairs in a 'reasonable time' - within 24 hours in cases of no heat or hot water.

Tonight, a spokesperson for Your Housing Group told The Mirror that repairs have been carried out on Monday and the heating is now back up and running.

The company apologised for the delay in fixing the problem, saying it "falls short" of the service it aims to provide.

Over the weekend, while waiting for repairs, Joseph said: "The kids are cold. We've had to have all five of us sleeping in the same bed for heat because the house is freezing. The kids can't really play or do anything because the house is too cold. We're sat under multiple layers, freezing.

"The past two nights I've had to sleep in a beanie hat, two hoodies, two pairs of pants and socks, which is very uncomfortable. I woke up yesterday morning and my lips were blue.

"The kids are freezing and we can't do anything to warm them. There's only so many blankets and jumpers you can put on.

"All I've been told is that an engineer will call us - but I've heard nothing. They don't seem to care less. We might as well be sat outside on the street because it's warmer out there than it is in here.

"I've come to a point where I just don't know who to turn to."

A Your Housing Group spokesman said: "Upon Mr Grady notifying us that his heating was not working, we immediately sent out a gas engineer and unfortunately the repair carried out did not resolve the problem and for this we sincerely apologise.

"A few days later with a new part, we were able to get the central heating fully up and running. We apologise that it wasn’t repaired immediately, as this falls short of the service we would want to provide.

"We did provide temporary heaters and offered hotel accommodation. Thankfully Mr Grady and his family now have full heating up and running."
