Family cat 'sadly dies' after fire in south Bristol

Firefighters were unable to save the life of a family's pet cat after a fire broke out in a first floor flat in Withywood.

Bedminster fire crews were called to attend reports of a house fire on Borleyton Walk shortly before 11am today (June 22).

Avon Fire and Rescue confirmed the fire was quickly extinguished following their arrival and all occupants managed to escape.

However, Bedminster fire station later said a family cat 'sadly died' despite the best efforts of crew members to save it.

The station tweeted: "#bluewatch attended a fire in Withywood this morning.

"All occupants got out, but despite the crews efforts to save the family cat and utilising the new pet oxygen masks, it sadly died."

The fire service also confirmed the cause of the fire is thought to be accidental.

A spokesman said: "Crews from Temple and Bedminster were mobilised to reports of a house fire on Borleyton Walk at 10.54am.

"On arrival, firefighters found a fire in a first floor flat.

"Crews used four breathing apparatus for safety, and two high pressure hose reels to extinguish the fire. The cause is thought to be accidental."
