False alarm as busy Bristol road sealed off due to object in river thought to be 'body'

An incident which saw a road in Bristol sealed off following a reported sighting of a "body" in the river was a false alarm, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to Clarence Road in Redcliffe at around 11.30am today (January 8) and the busy route was quickly closed after an object in the Avon sparked fears from members of the public.

Police officers and fire crews worked together to retrieve the object, which was found to be a "bundle of linen".

The fire service has labelled the operation "a false alarm with good intent".

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "Emergency services attended Clarence Road following a report of an object - possibly a body - in the water near the Langton Street bridge.

"The road was closed while police and fire crews attended following the call just after 11.30am.

"The object was located and thankfully is not a body."
