While much about video game development processes is kept relatively quiet and only ends up becoming public knowledge through investigative reporting, some developers have shared their own personal experiences and have provided valuable insight over the years. One such game-maker is none other than Tim Cain, the co-creator of the post-apocalyptic sci-fi IP Fallout that's grown into one of the most beloved RPGs in the genre.
For the past three years, Cain has maintained a personal YouTube channel upon which he's graced countless viewers with an ocean of game development stories, experiences, and pieces of advice for up-and-coming creators to keep in mind as they pursue their dream of making games.
In his latest video, though — one released on the third anniversary of the channel's creation — he's revealed that it's "winding down," and that it may be ending in the near future. While doing so, however, he also noted that he expects he'll make one last game before he goes into retirement.
"I think I am gonna make one more game before I retire again for the second time, but who knows," he mused.
Notably, Cain actually left retirement to rejoin Xbox's Obsidian Entertainment late last year, and is apparently working on an unannounced project. Previously, he was a programmer for the studio's South Park: The Stick of Truth, WildStar (he was also design director here), Pillars of Eternity, and Tyranny titles, a director for The Outer Worlds, and a creative consultant on The Outer Worlds 2.
At the time, he commented "Don't bother guessing, you're not gonna guess right," which strongly suggests his final game won't be a new Fallout, Pillars of Eternity, or The Outer Worlds title.
As for what it will be? Ultimately, any suggestion at this point is nothing but pure speculation, though if I had to guess, I'd say I'm expecting either an entirely new IP, or a new entry in a franchise he's not worked on before. Whatever the game is, though, I'd be surprised if it wasn't an RPG, given that's Cain's (and Obsidian's) genre of expertise.
In regards to his channel, Cain says that he's running out of topics to discuss on it, and at this point, has even managed to get through the process of answering the numerous questions about development he's received over time while covering other subjects and tales from his career.
"I do seem to be winding down on my list of topics. I wanted to point out, the channel is probably nearing the point where I see it being done," he noted. "I think I've explained the game industry as much as I can, I've told all my stories, the fun ones and the not-so-fun ones, and you've heard it all."
"I think the chance of there being a fourth anniversary video is small," Cain added. "It's not zero, [but it's] certainly not 100%. ... This channel's been up for three years. That's a long time, it's probably about 12 times longer than I thought it would be up."
Ultimately, I'll be sad to see Cain's channel reach its conclusion, as it's been a real treat to listen to him talk about various different game development topics these past few years. I'll always appreciate that he made it, though — and I'm excited to see and play the final game he makes before he retires in full.
