Falkirk crash to bottom in Championship relegation scrap after incredible afternoon

The Championship relegation battle has taken another incredible twist as Falkirk crashed to the bottom of the league this afternoon.

A brave comeback against Alloa saw Partick Thistle switch places with Ray McKinnon's men, who in an ironic twist of fate were beaten on their own patch by the manager's former club Morton.

Queen of the South produced a battling display to beat fifth-placed Dunfermline - who are still just four points ahead of Thistle in ninth - for their first win since the end of March.

And at the other end of the table Dundee United travelled to Inverness and secured a vital win to secure second place.

With just two matches left of the season for eight teams - Ayr and Thistle have a game in hand - the excitement is reaching fever point.

Record Sport Online rounds up this afternoon's crunch matches:

Falkirk 0 Greenock Morton 2

The script for this one pretty much wrote itself didn't it?

McKinnon isn't exactly everyone's favourite person down Inverclyde way after he ended a short three month stint at the club to join Falkirk at the end of August.

However, that wouldn't worry Morton fans today as Greg Kiltie and Charlie Telfer downed the dismal Bairns at the Falkirk stadium.

Falkirk now face a difficult trip to Dundee United next week and can consider themselves in serious trouble, while Morton travel to Dunfermline for their next match.

Inverness 0 Dundee United 2

It is still mathematically possible for Dundee United to win the league but chances are Robbie Neilson is focusing on preparing his team for the play-offs, in which they will either face Ayr or Inverness before the winner takes on whoever finishes 11th in the Premiership.

Partick Thistle 2 Alloa Athletic 1

The Wasps were in dreamland when they took a first half lead against Partick Thistle, courtesy of on-loan Celtic striker Jack Aitchison.

But they were stung by the Jags who fought back through Joe Cardle and the evergreen Scott McDonald.

Alloa drop to eighth, just one point ahead of Thistle, and are at home to Inverness next Saturday.

The home side travel to Ayr on Tuesday to fulfil a game in hand before entertaining Ayr (yep, that's right) in Maryhill next Saturday.

Queen of the South 2 Dunfermline Athletic 1

A sigh of relief for Gary Naysmith and Queen of the South as Iain Wilson and Josh Todd gave them a stronghold in their encounter with Dunfermline.

Jackson Longridge scored in the 95th minute to give the Doonhamers a fright but they held out for a vital three points to propel them to seventh.

A difficult trip to Ross County for them next weekend, while Dunfermline host Morton.
