‘Fake news’: Donald Trump pulls out his favorite playbook to dodge questions about the Epstein Files

For someone who built their entire presidential campaign on the promise to release the Epstein Files if elected, Donald Trump seems to lack enthusiasm at the moment, especially as government representatives are on the verge of disclosing all the details of those infamous files. I’m not implying that his shift in attitude towards the Epstein Files stems from guilt over activities he’d prefer to keep hidden, but I’m also not dismissing that possibility. If you’ve been following the recent developments in the case, you’d likely agree that both perspectives are valid.

In the past week, numerous controversial details regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case have come to light, first from the Democrats and then from the Republicans. In both cases, screenshots of various email exchanges between Epstein and several high-profile individuals were released, which included multiple references to Donald Trump. While it’s challenging to determine the context of these emails, they certainly do not reflect positively on the current President of the United States.

The emails shared do not explicitly indicate that Trump was involved in Epstein’s pedophilia ring, but they also do not eliminate the possibility. There’s even a mention of Trump spending time alone with one of Epstein’s victims in a room, but, yet again, no context is provided. While most of the recently released Epstein documents leave gaps in understanding owing to the absence of knowledge on surrounding factors, one thing the evidence does strongly suggest is that Trump was aware of Epstein’s misconduct for a long time but chose not to expose him. This implies that Trump was both an enabler and a liar for all the times he denied knowledge of Epstein’s actions.

Recently, on several occasions, Trump, who is typically very eager to engage with the press, has not been showing the same level of excitement, especially when faced with questions about the Jeffrey Epstein case. In a recent press interaction, when Trump was asked to share his thoughts on Representative Massie’s comments about him, which allege that his separate Epstein investigation was an attempt to stop the release of the remaining Epstein documents, Trump reacted with hostility towards the reporter, stating that she was a “terrible reporter” and represented “fake news” before claiming that the news outlet she works for is focused on deflecting from the “tremendous success of The Trump administration.”

Donald Trump’s response, or rather the absence of one, to the interviewer’s question is currently going viral on social media, including X (formerly Twitter). One person on the platform writes:

“Textbook projection from Trump again – this dude’s middle name is deflection.”

Another individual writes:

“Anytime Epstein gets mentioned, Trump glitches into that same three-button combo: fake news, terrible reporter, pretend victory lap.”
