FAI resources 'very tight' as Ireland Under-21's to take five flights for Armenia qualifier

Stephen Kenny and his Ireland Under-21's squad are feeling the effects of the FAI's financial problems as they face a mammoth commute for their Euro 2021 qualifying clash with Armenia.

The association's Sport Ireland funding was cut earlier this year amid investigations into former FAI chief John Delaney, as well as the association's governance and finance.

And as the FAI begins to ring the changes in the boardroom, much has stayed the same on the surface as normal service continued amongst the national sides for the most part.

But it appears that Kenny's side have taken a hit, with the former Dundalk boss describing how five flights could have detrimental effects on his team's preparations for next Thursday's game - while also impacting their home clash with Sweden on November 19.

Kenny’s squad will fly to London on Sunday and train there before leaving for Yerevan the next morning on two separate flights, arriving that night.

They will then need two flights home next Friday - via Moscow - before they can begin their preparation for the Swedish game in Tallaght.

Kenny said: “I’m used to going direct. With Dundalk we’d have always chartered a flight but I understand the way it is.

“Resources are very tight in the Association at the moment. We’re reminded of that consistently.

“(A charter) would blow your budget for the year, that’s the reality of it. But it’s not good preparation getting three flights and two back, it’s not good at all.”
