FAI appoint Gary Owens as new interim CEO

The FAI has tonight appointed Gary Owens as its interim chief executive.

He succeeds Paul Cooke who briefly stepped forward as 'executive lead' but now reverts to vice-president duties.

The FAI’s recruitment and selection process to appoint a permanent CEO will begin “in the coming weeks”.

Owens is a prominent figure in the financial services and technology sectors and previously worked for the IFG Group, Rainmaker Technologies and Hibernian Group.

He also held interim CEO roles with Athletics Ireland and Down Syndrome Ireland.

An FAI spokesman said Owens has “specialist expertise in business restructuring, turnaround strategies and governance structures.”

FAI independent chairperson Roy Barrett said: “Gary brings a wealth of experience to this interim role and the Board and I look forward to working with him.

"The Board would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Mr. Paul Cooke, FAI Board Member.

“At very short notice he held the position of Executive Lead on a pro bono basis for the past few weeks, whilst a process to identify and select an interim CEO was underway."
