Fab 5 Athletics Series proves a big success at Mary Peters Track

More than 250 athletes took to the Mary Peters Track recently for the second instalment of the Fab 5 Athletics Series.

With a range of events including High Jump, Shot Putt, sprints and long distance running there were plenty of opportunities for local athletes to pit their wits against fellow athletes from across Northern Ireland.

The 200m U13 Girls’ race saw two Belfast-based athletic clubs triumphant as Benita Adams from North Belfast Harriers and Sarah Van Linde of Orangegrove Athletics Club winning heats three and four with times of 30.4 and 31.09 respectively.

Willowfield Harriers athletes dominated the senior races when Hannah Gilliland won the 800m race with an impressive time of 2.26.71 and Desire Bamisile who narrowly beat Ronan Bloomer with a time of 23.46 in the 200m race.

St Anne’s Athletics Club also picked up a number of medals, including the 600m U11 Boys’ race (heat two) with winner Ronan Jenkins and the 200m U13 Boys’ race with Rhys Douglas (heat 1) and Saul Thompson (heat 2).

Angeline Murphy, Marketing Manager at firmus energy, said: “We have been the main sponsor for this event for six years, each year the event grows in stature and popularity with more athletes coming to compete against the best.

"Lagan Valley Athletics Club have continued to grow this series and increase participation through new events attracting a wider range of athletes of all ages and capabilities."

John Glover from Lagan Valley Athletics Club, added: “We had a great cohort of athletes who took part in the second meet of the firmus energy Fab 5 series.

"What’s wonderful about this event is each time we see new faces, creating more competition and an exciting atmosphere. This event is open to everyone, of all capabilities, ultimately we want people to enjoy themselves.”
