FA confirm decision on Gareth Southgate's future as England manager

The Football Association have announced that Gareth Southgate will continue as England manager following the Three Lions' World Cup quarter-final exit to France last weekend.

The Three Lions, despite producing a valiant effort, exited the tournament at the last-eight stage, losing 2-1 to the reining World Cup holders in Qatar. Harry Kane missed a late penalty, after earlier converting from the spot, to almost certainly send the contest to extra time.

The aftermath of the defeat was dominated by talk of Southgate's future. The former Crystal Palace and Aston Villa defender, who took charge of the Three Lions back in 2016, has overseen a period of sufficient progress for the national team and confirmed that he wanted to take some time to make a decision on his future.

England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018 and then the final of the delayed European Championship in 2021, being beaten on penalties by Italy, highlighting the progress they have made under his stewardship. The Three Lions will be hoping to end their long trophy drought at the next European Championship in Germany in just 18 months time, with Southgate leading the team forward.

In a statement, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham, said: "We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager, and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign. Gareth and Steve Holland [Southgate's assistant] have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now."

England will begin their qualifying campaign for the Euros in March, facing Italy in their opening fixture in Naples. The Three Lions have been joined by Malta, North Macedonia and Ukraine in their qualifying group.
