Extinction Rebellion protester scales Bristol Airport's huge welcoming spire

A climber has scaled Bristol Airport's welcoming spire during a night of action outside the venue.

Dressed in retro pilot gear, the unnamed man used climbing ropes to reach the top of the structure.

He said to Bristol Live: "This is the most ridiculous sculpture, a phallic symbol of nonsense, so many people have wanted to climb up here and have some fun.

"What a piece of rubbish, celebrating some obsolete technology that is out-of-date."

When he reached the top, he held a red banner saying 'tell the truth'.

Extinction Rebellion has joined forced with  local campaigners at Felton Village Hall to stage tonight's protests.

The demonstration is currently being held on the footpath next to the A38 , although Extinction Rebellion activists have kept details about the evening's schedule under wraps - including whether they intend to disrupt traffic.

Bristol Airport  has ambitious expansion plans which will increase its capacity from 10 to 12 million passengers annually.

Extinction Rebellion campaigners said because of the climate emergency,  declared by both central government and Bristol City Council ,  the proposals should be scrapped.
