Extinction Rebellion protest: What happened on day one as pink boat blocked Bristol Bridge

Protesters took to the streets of Bristol yesterday (July 15) causing disruption and delays throughout the city centre.

Their aim is to push the 'climate emergency' - which has been declared by the UK's Government - to the centre of ministers' agenda.

To start off, activists from Extinction Rebellion blocked Bristol Bridge with a huge pink boat emblazoned with the words "tell the truth".

Musicians taking part in the protest then staged what is known as a ‘die-in’ in Castle Park.

Throughout the day, several roads were closed as protesters marched through the city centre, causing severe delays during rush hour later on in the day.

We are reporting live updates on the second day of the Extinction Rebellion protest action here .

The protest also caused disruption for bus passengers, with several First Bus services being diverted due to the closures of Bristol Bridge and Baldwin Street.

Elsewhere during the day, activists dressed in red surprised shoppers in The Galleries and banners were hung across the city.

We spoke to businesses affected by the protest, most of which said the impact was minimal.

We also chatted to the activists themselves.

For the second day of the protest, Extinction Rebellion Youth Bristol will be camping in College Green and undertaking activities to highlight the emergency.

Meanwhile, older activists will be challenging councillors and the Mayor on their carbon plans at the City Council.
