Omicron twice: Experts warn it's 'certainly possible' to catch variant for second time

Omicron has caused chaos across the UK throughout winter, with the latest coronavirus variant resulting in soaring case numbers due to it being highly transmissible.

However, even if you've just caught Omicron, you may not be free from catching it a second time as scientists have now reported that people can get infected with the strain again.

US epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding, the senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington DC, has warned that getting reinfected with Omicron is 'certainly possible' due to a few reasons.

Dr Feigl-Ding tweeted: "There are lots of recent anecdotes about new Omicron reinfections after a recent Omicron infection.

"It's certainly possible if your first Omicron infection was a low-dose one that didn't stimulate your immune system enough or if you’re immunocompromised. Be careful folks."

The World Health Organisation has citedthat Omicron can evade immunity from vaccines and previous infection.

However, boosters were shown to prevent symptoms in 75 per cent of Omicron cases, according to the UK Health Security Agency.
