Expert warns against tin foil dishwasher hack but shares cheap products to use instead

TikTok has become a go-to place for cleaning advice, and although you can learn some amazing tips from scrolling on the platform, some methods that go viral aren't always advisable to follow.

One cleaning hack which has recently gone viral is one that claims to get your dishes sparkling – and many have claimed it works. The hack involves placing a scrunched up ball of tin foil into your dishwasher during a cycle – and it's supposed to leave your cutlery sparkling.

However, even though the hack has worked for many people – experts warn it can actually end up doing more harm than good due to potential damage caused as a result.

Appliance experts at RGB Direct said: "The hack itself has seen some great successes and has proven to be a great one as the foil will be tarnished through the rinse cycle and come out brown, this means that the tarnish on the silverware will be lifted.

"However, by adding it to your dishwasher it can actually cause more harm than good by scratching the interior particularly if the foil is scrunched up or folded in a way that creates sharp edges.

"It can also clog the drainage system if the foil rips apart potentially damaging the dishwasher's pump or if the foil comes into contact with the heating element or other electrical components of your dishwasher, it can cause a short circuit or other electrical damage.

"And with the average cost of repairing a dishwasher being £165 this maybe something you want to avoid!"

Instead, the experts have shared other things you can add to your dishwasher to help make your dishes sparkle – and they all cost less than £1.

Firstly, you could try adding a cup of vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher, which can help remove any buildup or residue in the machine and your dishes.

Another thing to try is baking soda, which can help deoderise the machine and neutralise any unpleasant odours.

A few tablespoons of lemon juice works in a similar way, and it can also add a fresh scent.

If you live in an area with hard water, experts recommend adding dishwasher salt to the machine to help soften the water and prevent mineral buildup on your glasses.

If you're struggling with unpleasant smells, you can try to add a few drops of essential oil.

Remember to always check your dishwasher's manual to make sure you are using the right products and amounts for optimal performance.
