'Exactly what we needed': K'gari-Fraser Island to reopen as rain contains bushfire

Bushfire-ravaged K'gari-Fraser Island will reopen to the public tomorrow after much-needed rain helped firefighters contain a blaze that had been burning since mid-October.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service handed operation of the bushfire, which blackened more than half the island, back to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) on Sunday.

From Tuesday, accommodation providers can welcome guests, vehicles will be permitted on the eastern beach, access will be granted to the townships and camping spots will open up.

Tourism operators busy getting ready

Tourism and accommodation providers have welcomed the news.

Cathedrals on Fraser campground manager Jack Worcester said the Christmas and New Year holiday season was looking busy.

"Not everyone has cancelled. We're about 40 per cent booked," he said.

"This rain is exactly what we needed!

"I'm drenched through to the bone [from being] outside getting everything ready."

Tourism and Events Fraser Coast general manager Martin Simons said the island's main drawcards had not been affected by the bushfire.

"Lake McKenzie and Central Station have been untouched," he said.

"The island will bounce back.

"You'll see the vastness and the size of the island and you don't get too many opportunities to do that."

Stay safe, follow the rules

QPWS deputy director-general Ben Klaassen said while the fire had not been extinguished, the World Heritage-listed island was now safe to visit.

"The island is starting to regenerate — there are green shoots already coming through," he said.

"Overall, the fire is under control and we are expecting the recovery to get underway now.

"We encourage all visitors to follow the rules, stay safe and enjoy your Christmas holiday."

Some fire-affected areas and walking tracks will still have restricted access for safety reasons.
