Exact time Storm Dennis gales and flooding will hit Edinburgh as Met Office extend weather warning

The Met Office has just extended its Storm Dennis weather warning to include Edinburgh: a yellow weather warning for heavy rain and wind is now in place for Saturday 15 February, and a wind warning is in place for Sunday 16 February. The storm was initially predicted to miss the Scottish capital.

Storm Dennis is a recently-named weather front that follows on from Storm Ciara, which is still causing issues in Edinburgh due to heavy snow, flooding - and dangerous icicles plunging from the Queensferry Crossing.

Gusts of up to 60mph are expected at the weekend, the Met Office said, with heavy rain at times.

Edinburgh was initially predicted to miss most of the Storm Dennis-related gusts: there was initially only a yellow alert for rain in place for southern Scotland on Friday, with the Met Office saying that rain and snow melt across Midlothian and East Lothian may lead to some travel disruption. This is still in place.

However, this has today (12 February) been updated and a yellow weather warning is now in place for wind and rain for Edinburgh and the Lothians from 9am on Saturday morning until 6pm on Saturday evening.

Forecasters say that bus and train services will probably be affected, with spray and flooding on roads. Large waves in coastal areas could cause dangerous conditions, there will be delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

They also say that it is likely that some homes and businesses could be flooded.

Then, from 12pm on Sunday until 12pm on Monday (17 February), a yellow wind warning is in place for all of Scotland, including Edinburgh.

Travel is expected to be disrupted as road rail, air and ferry services are all affected, and roads and bridges could be closed because of the winds.

The Met Office also warned of a chance of power cuts and mobile phone coverage disruption. Dennis is the fourth storm to be named by the Met Office since September last year.

Steve Ramsdale, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "Another spell of very wet and windy weather is expected for Saturday.

"Although Storm Dennis is currently not expected to be as severe as Ciara, disruption is still likely.

"Our confidence in the forecast means we have been able to issue severe weather warnings well in advance, giving people time to prepare for potential impacts of the storm.

"With further warnings possible over the next few days people should keep up to date with the Met Office forecast using our website, app or by following us on social media."
