Ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino favourite for Aston Villa job amid Steven Gerrard sacking

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is favourite to replace Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. Gerrard was sacked by Villa on Thursday night following their heavy 3-0 defeat at Fulham, and the Argentine is being heavily-linked with the vacancy.

The potential arrival of Pochettino would represent a statement appointment from Villa, with the club currently 17th in the Premier League with two wins from 11 matches. He left Paris Saint-Germain in July after winning the Ligue 1 title, but he could only take the French giants to the round of 16 of the Champions League.

The 50-year-old enjoyed the best years of his managerial career during his five-year spell at Tottenham. He led Spurs to a Champions League final, four consecutive top four finishes and a Carabao Cup final.

The likes of Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel have been linked with the vacancy, although Matt Law of the Telegraph has reported that the former Chelsea boss is not interested in the job, even if big wages are offered. Therefore, the bookmakers make Pochettino the leading candidate.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has suggested that Villa may have sacked Gerrard to ensure that they don't miss out on Pochettino. The former Spurs boss has already been out of work for over three months - and it's unlikely that a manager of his calibre will spend much more time out of a job.

"You look at Pochettino who is out there, out of work and he has already been linked with the club," Robinson told Amazon Prime. "You look at other clubs in the Premier League who have missed out on managers because other clubs have got their first, maybe that had something to do with the decision."
