Ex-Rangers player Trevor Francis dies age 69

British football’s first £1 million player, Trevor Francis, has died at the age of 69 and tributes have flooded in.

The former Birmingham City striker died from a heart attack in Spain, a spokesman for the family has confirmed.

Plymouth-born Francis scored Nottingham Forest’s winner in their 1979 European Cup final triumph and won 52 England caps.

He later guided Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham to major finals as a manager.

Francis spent half a year in Spain and the rest in Solihull. He suffered a heart attack 11 years ago and had kept himself fit with daily power walks.

He had an annual health check through the League Managers’ Association.

Tributes paid to Trevor Francis following his death aged 69

Gary Lineker was quick to pay tribute to Francis following the news of his death, writing on Twitter: “Deeply saddened to hear that Trevor Francis has died. A wonderful footballer and lovely man. Was a pleasure to work alongside him both on the pitch and on the telly. RIP Trevor.”

Nottingham Forest’s official Twitter account shared a picture of Francis, writing: “Nottingham Forest is deeply saddened to learn the passing of two-time European Cup winner, Trevor Francis.

“A true Forest legend who will never be forgotten.”

Chris Kamara tweeted a picture of Trevor Francis, writing: “Oh no, just heard Trevor Francis has passed away. What a player he was & what a gentleman. Got to know him well when Trevor was doing his Co Commentary for Sky a job he loved. RIP Trevor the first Million-pound player who always looked like a million dollars.”

Peter Shilton also tweeted a picture of Francis’ footballing days, writing: “I’m absolutely devastated to hear about my old teammate Trevor Francis such a wonderful gentleman a friend and a terrible loss.”
