Former West Tigers centre James Roberts has been arrested and charged after police were told of alleged AVO breaches.

The 30-year-old was arrested outside Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday where he appeared for a brief court mention.

In that matter, police are seeking an apprehended violence order for the protection of Roberts' wife Anna Jovanovic.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed the ex-NRL player had been arrested, saying they had received reports of alleged breaches of an AVO protecting a 35-year-old woman.

Roberts was taken to Mascot Police Station and subsequently charged, granted conditional bail and will appear before Downing Centre again on November 1.

As well as playing for the West Tigers, Roberts also played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Penrith Panthers, Gold Coast Titans and the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL.

He represented NSW at the State of Origin in 2018 and played for the Indigenous All Stars and City Origin before retiring in 2022.

The AVO matter will return to court on October 25.
