Ex-Nottingham Forest manager Steve McClaren says he would return to former club 'immediately'

Former Nottingham Forest manager Steve McClaren has made himself available to FC Twente, the club he has managed twice before, despite them having a manager in place.

The latest blow to McClaren's managerial career came earlier this month when he was sacked by Forest’s struggling Championship rivals QPR after a run of just one win in 15 games, but now he’s open to a return to Holland.

Twente were relegated from the Eredivisie last season, but look set for an instant return under current boss Marino Pusic.

"I still think, if FC Twente asks tomorrow if I want to return, I will come immediately,” he told Dutch television network RTV Oost.

“For me, it is a fantastic club, with great people and fantastic supporters.”

The 57-year-old endured an ill-fated spell as manager at the City Ground in 2011, lasting just 112 days after taking just eight points from his first 10 games in charge.

After leaving Forest, he returned to Twente for his second spell, spending a year there before moving back to England and taking up the reins at Forest’s arch-rivals, Derby County.

The ex-England boss had two spells at Pride Park, as well as one at Newcastle, and he admits his departure from Twente left him somewhat deflated.

“The fact that I had to 'hand in' my contract at FC Twente in my second period was one of the biggest setbacks in my trainer career,” he said.

“The club wanted me to leave. I don't know why, but they wanted to take a different course. Very disappointing for me.

"(If they ask me) then I will do it again, provided that the prospects for a successful period are present."
