Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has slammed Ian Poveda for being 'naive' in the Whites' 3-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League at the weekend.
Marcelo Bielsa's side took the lead through Patrick Bamford with just four minutes on the clock but were on the receiving end of backlash from the Blues.
Olivier Giroud netted an equaliser before the interval, with Kurt Zouma putting the hosts ahead after the break before Christian Pulisic's goal settled the game in stoppage time.
Leeds had opportunities during the game though and one major incident came in the second half when Poveda shook off a challenge from Ben Chilwell inside the box.
The Spaniard was honest with his reaction to the challenge but Whelan believes he was 'naive' and should go down in the future to leave the officials and VAR with a decision to make.
“Look, on the one hand you want to applaud him for being honest because there is not enough of that in the game,” he told Football Insider.
"First and foremost you have got to give him credit for that but it is also a bit naive. When you feel that kind of contact, you go down. You have to.
“Other teams will do that to us this season and that could have brought us back into the game. At 2-2 you have a chance, something to hold onto rather than chasing the game.
“I cannot really blame the young man because I complain about players going down too easily. Poveda did not do a great deal when he came on though, I thought it was a strange substitution. He did not bring much to the party.”
