Ex-Hearts defender Aaron Hughes retires after Northern Ireland win over Belarus

Former Hearts defender Aaron Hughes has retired from football after Northern Ireland’s 1-0 win over Belarus.

The veteran defender left Hearts after the expiry of his contract and was expected to announce his retirement publicly following Northern Ireland’s double header over last night’s opponents and Estonia, who they beat 2-1 at the weekend.

With 112 caps, Hughes bows out just seven short of legendary Northern Irish goalkeeper and record holder Pat Jennings.

Hughes wasn’t in the squad for the Belarus game, but Steven Davis, who is poised to overtake Hughes and Jennings in the cap stakes on 109, revealed the former Newcastle Utd defender addressed the squad afterwards.

"Aaron spoke to us after the game and he was a little bit emotional, which is understandable," said Davis.

"He has been a huge player for us over many years, such a consistent performer, and he will be remembered as a proper legend.

"Aaron still looks as if he could play on for a couple more years, but if he has made a decision to retire, we've got to respect that and wish him well."

Hughes made seven appearances for Hearts last season and had spent the last 2 and a half years of his career at Tynecastle .
