Ex-Giant Pat Flaherty fired by Dolphins

Former New York Giants offensive line coach Pat Flaherty is jobless again after being relived of his duties by the Miami Dolphins on Monday.

Flaherty, 63, was hired by the Dolphins this past February after being let go by the Jacksonville Jaguars after the end of last season. Flaherty was the Giants’ offensive line coach under head coach Tom Coughlin from 2004-2015 and was not brought back after Coughlin was replaced by Ben McAdoo in 2016.

Flaherty coached the San Francisco 49ers’s line that season under Chip Kelly.

It appears Flaherty’s ways were not meshing under Dolphins’ first-year head coach Brian Flores, assistant head coach Jim Caldwell and offensive coordinator Chad O’Shea. He will be replaced by Dave Deguglielmo.

Flores, a former defensive assistant in New England, has surrounded himself with other former Patriots’ assistants. O’Shea was the Pats’ wide receiver coach from 2009-18 and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham — who served as the Giants’ defensive line coach under McAdoo and spent 2009-2015 as an assistant under Bill Belichick.

Deguglielmo has spent time with six NFL teams in the capacity of either an offensive line or assistant offensive line coach, including the Giants, Jets and Patriots.

Flaherty, although he is the architect of the Giants’ legendary offensive lines from their most recent Super Bowl seasons, is unlikely to be brought back to East Rutherford. Hal Hunter is in his second year in that role under Pat Shurmur and is in tune with the Giants’ offensive scheme.
