Ex-Giant Matt Rhule hired as Nebraska head coach

Former New York Giants assistant coach Matt Rhule, who was fired by the Carolina Panthers earlier this year, has accepted the head coaching job at Nebraska.

The program announced the hire on Saturday.

“One of the things that drew me to it is knowing that Scott had been there for the last several years,” Rhule said, via ESPN. “Scott Frost is a coach that I truly respect and consider a friend. And so I know that program has a good culture, I know they know how to work. Now it’s about just all of us picking up, moving forward.”

Rhule served as the Giants’ assistant offensive line coach under Tom Coughlin in 2012 but left to take the Temple head coaching job after just one season.

In 2020, the Giants interviewed Rhule for their vacant head coaching job but ultimately lost out on his services to Carolina, who offered him a massive seven-year, $62 million deal.

After missing out on Rhule, the Giants hired Joe Judge to be their next head coach but that experiment lasted just two seasons. He was fired in January and promptly replaced by current head coach Brian Daboll.

Although Rhule struggled as a lead man in the NFL, he has a long history of turning programs around at the college level.
