Ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon angrily hit player in face with sandwich after defeat

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon hit James Forrest in the face with a sandwich as he tore into his players after a defeat.

Ex-Hoops defender Adam Matthews, 31, revealed he was in the dressing room as Lennon read his team the riot act.

He watched as a raging Lennon grabbed a sandwich off a tray and hurled it towards Forrest. The stunned winger did not wipe the snack off his face and let the filling slide down him as Lennon continued to give his side both barrels during his first spell in charge at Parkhead.

But Matthews, who now plays under Lennon in Cyprus, insisted any changing room incidents were quickly forgotten.

The Welshman said: “I just remember him picking up a sandwich and launching it at James Forrest and it’s gone splat.

“You are scared when he is shouting, so James Forrest hasn’t wiped it off or anything and has just left it rolling down his face. But the next day he’s laughing and joking about it – so as long as he doesn’t get personal and he doesn’t hold a grudge, which he doesn’t, I think there’s no problem in getting angry.

“I think that it’s gone out of the game a bit and these days you can’t really shout at people now but I really enjoyed playing for him.”

Speaking to the Celtic View Podcast, Matthews added: “He makes you feel like you’re the best player in the world even though you know you’re not.”

Right-back Matthews joined Celtic from Cardiff in 2011 and played 101 games for the club. He left to join Sunderland and had spells with Bristol City and Charlton before he signed for Omonia last year.
