Ex-Broncos draft pick Chad Kelly is now the Colts’ No. 2 quarterback

After star quarterback Andrew Luck unexpectedly retired from the NFL on Saturday evening, the Colts were left with Jacoby Brissett as their new starter. Brissett’s backup will likely be Chad Kelly.

Kelly (6-2, 224 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Ole Miss. He spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve before beating out Paxton Lynch for a spot on the 53-man roster last summer.

Kelly began the 2018 season as Denver’s reserve quarterback, appearing in one game for a kneel-down situation. Midway through the season, Kelly was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespassing on Oct. 23. Denver cut him the next day.

After being let go by the Broncos, Kelly remained a free agent until May. He signed with the Colts this spring and was promptly suspended by the NFL for two games for his trespassing incident last fall.

Once he returns from his suspension, Kelly will presumably be Indy’s backup quarterback for the 2019 season.
