Ex-Arsenal star left in tears and pays touching tribute to his late mum after title win

Former Arsenal star Lucas Torreira was left in tears after helping Galatasaray to win the Turkish Super Lig title.

The midfielder joined the Istanbul-based side last summer from the Gunners, with Torreira having no place in Mikel Arteta's plans at the Emirates Stadium. Having endured a frustrating summer after Fiorentina declined to sign him permanently following a loan move, Torreira has found a home at Galatasaray.

The Uruguayan has made 30 appearances in the Turkish top-flight, with 27 of those coming as starts. That included a 4-1 win over Ankaragücü on Tuesday night which secured Galatasaray's first Turkish title for four years.

It proved to be an emotional evening for Torreira as he celebrated his side's achievements, as he took a moment to pay tribute to his mother who passed away two years ago. He wore a T-shirt which included a message of rememberance to her during the celebrations.

The midfielder then took a moment to sit down on the bench and privately take a moment to himself, which left him in tears. Team-mate Dries Mertens then went over to comfort an emotional Torreira.

Torreira posted the image of him on the bench on Instagram, alongside a heartfelt message thanking Galatasaray's fans and players. He also added a line paying tribute to his mother, who he hailed as his "biggest fan".

"We Are The Champions! I want to express my deep emotion and gratitude for being a part of this amazing team. This achievement would not have been possible without the unconditional support of our fans," Torreira wrote.

"Your energy and encouragement has pushed us every step of the way. Thank you for being our strength and our inspiration. To my teammates, I want to express my admiration and respect for your dedication and effort.

"Together, we have overcome adversity and stood united in our quest for glory. This title is as a result of our unity and determination. We are the real champions! Grateful to this beautiful city that has welcomed me with open arms.

"From day one, I felt the love and warmth from the fans and the community at large. Their support has been instrumental in our conquest. This city has become my second home, and I am honored to represent you on the playing field.

"In this moment of joy, I also want to thank my family. Especially to you Mom, who are watching and watching over me from above, my biggest fan and my source of strength. Thank you all for being a part of this amazing journey. Let's continue to celebrate together and build a lasting legacy in soccer."

Galatasaray secured the title with one game remaining, with it being the 23rd time they have finished top of the Turkish top-flight. They will finish at least two points clear of runners-up Fenerbahce and have secured a place in the Champions League qualifiers.
