Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey says it is “only normal” that football restarts amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Premier League is set to return next month after plans for a June 17 restart were confirmed.
The resumption of English football follows Germany’s example after the Bundesliga became the first high-profile league in Europe to restart, while Italy and Spain are set to follow suit.
And Ramsey, now plying his trade with Juventus in Serie A, has given his backing to the plans.
“Across Europe now, I think it’s only right that football tries to restart,” Ramsey told Sky Sports. For us and the Premier League to restart is only normal, and as footballers we want to go out there and play.
“We miss going out there and playing, and even though it’s going to be a different situation this time, we still love the game and we’ve missed this, so we’re very excited to have it back.”
Ramsey made the move to Italy last summer after his contract at Arsenal ran out, and is hoping to help them to their ninth league title in a row.
They sit just a point above Lazio at the top of the table though as they prepare for their return to action, and must also overturn a 1-0 deficit against Lyon in the Champions League last-16 if they’re to progress.
“It’s important now for us to try and complete the league,” Ramsey added.
“Hopefully everybody can stay healthy and that gets achieved, and then go into the Champions League after that maybe.
“Who knows? There’s so many possibilities and things that can happen from now until then, but we’ll take each week as it comes, and we’ll just be grateful to have the chance to go back out there again.”
