It is believed the true number could be much higher after days of record-breaking Covid-19 cases.

The Government is now considering bringing in a so-called circuit breaker to reduce transmission, most likely on December 27 or 28.

It would mean indoor mixing would be banned - so no house parties or family gatherings over new year.

Here are the places which could be forced to close:

  • Pubs, bars and restaurants would be shut indoors would be allowed to serve takeaway or have customers outdoors
  • Theatres, cinemas and other entertainment could close
  • Football stadia and other large event venues

Shops would be allowed to remain open and it is understood services like hairdressers and beauty salons could also be allowed to continue.

Schools are also likely to be allowed to open as usual for the January term.
