Everything to know from Chargers’ 27-20 loss to Raiders

It was over when...

The Chargers turned the ball over on downs on their second-to-final possession. After giving the ball back to the Raiders, they were able to eat up most of the clock, giving Los Angeles just 22 seconds to score from its own 10.

Game notes

• The Chargers scored just one touchdown against the league’s worst defense.
• Justin Herbert finished 28-of-47 passing for 335 yards and a touchdown.
• Down Corey Linsley and Trey Pipkins, Herbert was in the face of Raider defenders, most notably Chandler Jones and Maxx Crosby, who each had eight pressures. Herbert was sacked five times.
• Joe Lombardi did not adjust to mitigate the pressure, rarely implementing rollouts or play-actions and going away from the run game.
• The Chargers converted on just five of 16 third-down attempts. Joshua Palmer accounted for three of them. Keenan Allen, Herbert’s safety blanket on third down, consistently struggled to separate.
• Even though he didn’t show up until late in the game, Allen still led the team in receiving with six catches on 14 targets for 88 yards and a 35-yard touchdown on 4th-and-12 in the fourth quarter.
• Gerald Everett had his most productive performance in a Chargers uniform this season, amassing 80 yards on five catches. Everett was physical after the catch.
• While not resorted to as much as it should have, the running game was decent. Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley combined for 65 yards on 17 carries (3.8 yards per carry). Kelley averaged 4.3 YPC.
• The defense came out firing on all cylinders, allowing just 37 yards of total offense in the first quarter and forcing two turnovers, including an interception touchdown by Bryce Callahan.
• It was all downhill from there. Due to the Chargers’ inability to get pressure, Derek Carr had plenty of time in the pocket. Carr consistently found his top target Davante Adams, who accounted for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
• Adams had his way with Asante Samuel Jr. Samuel allowed five receptions for 102 yards and Adams’ 31-yard score.
• The run defense woes continued for the Chargers. Josh Jacobs had a field day, totaling 144 yards on 26 carries, including a 20-yard touchdown.
• The same issues occurred: struggling to be physical at the point of attack, edges not being set, linebackers not being disciplined, and just flat-out poor tackling.

The Chargers now have a 28% chance of making the playoffs after this loss.
